I have a slight obsession with cherry blossoms. In Japanese mythology they represent how fragile life really is. They bloom and are quickly swept away by wind and rain. They are fragile just like life.
Samurai’s adopted the flower as their symbol when going into battle. Life is fragile…just like the cherry blossom…it could be taken at any moment.
I’m making a cherry blossom hat for “hat day” at the De Young museum.
I have a strange obsession with numbers too….
The box of Cherry blossoms had a random number of loose petals. My lucky numbers are 5 and 25. I started layering and arranging the petals. 5 layered petals to a flower. I ended up with 25 flowers. Each one secured with 1 glass bead. We are 1 when we enter the world and 1 when we leave the world.
Lola stayed by my side the entire time I was sewing the petals together…
The petals look so real. I can’t wait to plant them on the hat…
This morning I had a great idea of how to make the branches. I cut strips of felt and wrapped yarn around them. As I wrapped the yarn, i adjusted the tension of the yarn creating little bumps and angles…just like a cherry tree branch.
Close up of the hat detail. By the way…this is a cocktail hat. It sits on the side of the head…with branches cascading down. It is secured with a millinery elastic. I’m adding a gold bee button.
Here is what the entire hat looks like…it is still only pinned together…a lot of hand sewing left to do…
Nothing like doing creative work at the last minute…oh, the pressure!
p.s. there is no wire in the branches….they curve and bend naturally….just like a real Cherry blossom tree branch.
